The Symptoms of
Short Term Stress
The effects of stress on our bodies are not always obvious. If we learn to recognize the symptoms of short term stress, it will better enable us to take care or our bodies by reducing stress levels.
Everyone experiences stress at one time or another. With tax season upon us, many people have heightened stress levels right now. It is just one more thing that we must add to our already impossible to do list, and we hope that it isn't the final straw that breaks our backs. Stress manifests itself in different ways, and it is important to recognize them so that we can make efforts to reduce our stress levels.
Some symptoms of stress might not be very obvious. You may not consider a feeling of flush or warmth, a difficulty in concentration, or a dry mouth (being thirsty), as signs of stress, but they are. It is perfectly normal to experience some stress, but if you have these symptoms, you should acknowledge the possibility of a heighten stress level, and make an effort to relax.
Other short term stress symptoms are a bit more recognizable. You may experience a palpitation, loose stool, or a memory disturbance, and attribute it to something you ate or a host of other things other than stress. If you have some of these symptoms, plus the other ones I mentioned earlier, you are probably under stress.
There are more serious signs of short term stress that most people would recognize as stress, such as sleeplessness, a feeling of anxiety and outbursts of anger. Many people know that when they experience these things, it is because they have to deal with one or two more things than usual, and they can't take the pressure. These symptoms can begin to interfere with our job, relationships, and energy levels. The results of these stress symptoms can lead to a cycle of increased stress because there is now anxiety about how we are affecting our jobs, relationships and energy levels.
Stress can yield some other problematic symptoms. These include decreased sexual drive, decreased appetite, headaches and back/neck pain. A loss in libido can cause relationship problems, which can make stress symptoms even worse. Not eating during times of stress can cause a slow down in metabolism, and the body will start to store extra energy, which means weight gain. If you are experiencing headaches and back or neck pains, it is high time that you find some relief for your stress.
High levels of stress can also increase difficulties with peptic ulcers, diabetes, arthritis, and skin diseases like eczema or psoriasis. If you suffer from any of these problems regularly, you can reduce symptoms by reducing stress.
Short term stress can easily become chronic or long term stress, which can develop into further physical problems. Pay attention to these early signs of the development of stress, and make an effort to ease your stress symptoms, and preserve your physical and emotional health.
